Building Your Intelligence System
From capital seeker to capital interpreter
This chapter transforms a one-time capital raise into a permanent strategic advantage. It describes the four-component intelligence system and the operational rhythm that makes the entire guide a practice rather than an event.
The transition is from capital seeker (competing for attention among hundreds) to capital interpreter (an infrastructure node providers and practitioners seek out because you understand where capital is flowing, who is deploying, what terms look like, and where opportunities exist).
The four intelligence components
- Deal Monitoring — Google Alerts (8–12 phrases), DFI press release pages, AVCA / Convergence / ImpactAlpha newsletters, LinkedIn key individuals. Output: continuously updated 'Who’s Raising Now' board.
- Investor Relationship Map — living database of 30–50 institutions: type, focus, ticket, contact, last interaction, status, recent activity, connection path. Output: ranked map feeding the Chapter 7 scoring matrix.
- Appetite Tracking — annual reports, replenishment cycles (ADF, IDA, bilateral strategy papers), AVCA / Convergence quarterly data, political signals from bilateral home governments. Output: quarterly appetite assessment.
- Pipeline & Performance Tracking — your own raise pipeline (prospecting → engaged → DD → committed → disbursed), meetings, conversion rates, time-to-close, win/loss. Output: monthly executive dashboard.
The quarterly intelligence rhythm
| Cadence | Activity | Time | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly | Review alerts and DFI press; update deal table | 30 min | Updated deal flow; flagged opportunities |
| Monthly | Pipeline review; relationship updates; reactivation outreach | 1 hour | Updated metrics; reactivation list |
| Quarterly | Appetite assessment; AVCA/Convergence review; provider re-scoring | Half day | Updated framework; revised approach sequence |
| Annually | Win/loss patterns; landscape changes; readiness scorecard; next-year targets | Full day | Annual intelligence report; capital strategy |
